Ghanaian school IT system overhaul gets go-ahead
The Ghanaian government has approved a Parliamentary Committee
report which puts forward suggestions on how to improve the IT systems at one
of the country's senior high schools.
The report, collated by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), recommends that St. Louis Senior High School seeks technical guidance from the Ministry of Communications on how to improve its current system.
The school should ensure that its IT management follows best practice whilst ensuring that it adequately meets the needs of the school.
Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah who signed off the PAC report, said that the reform of the school's IT systems were a result of its management weaknesses.
Mr Kan-Dapaah highlighted the institution's absence of:
- technical documentation;
- an information system strategy;
- control over user access; and
- back-up systems.
Mr Kan-Dapaah said in accordance with sections 11(1) and (3) of the Audit Service Act, 2000 (Act 584), the Auditor-General conducted an audit of the Information Systems of St Louis Senior High School to review and approve the controls and procedures operated by management, to ensure that information was reliable and the continued integrity of the school's critical systems was safeguarded.
This review is in line with efforts to bring the public sector's pre-university institutions up to speed with the advancement in information technology.
