Types of search


Within the tso.co.uk searches can be performed on content or products using either the Quick Search or Advanced Search functionality:

Quick Search


Quick Search allows you to search to perform searches on the product or content information within the corporate area.

Advanced Search


Advanced Search allows you to be more specific within your search requirements and enter a combination of either content information (Content Search) or bibliographic (Publication Search) .

Content Search


The search options under Content Search are split into 5 main key areas:

1. Keywords

To carry out a search using keywords, enter the keywords of the title you are searching for in the 'Keywords' field.

2. Using


  • All words - the search engine will search under all words selected, search results retreived will feature all words, in any order. This is the default setting
  • Exact phrase -the search engine will search under the exact search term selected, search results retrieved will feature the exact phrase selected.
  • Any words - the search engine will search under any of the words selected, search results retrieved will feature any one of the words selected.
  • Concept - the search engine's thesaurus function will also search under words with the same meaning as the search term selected.

3. Search Across

Allows you to specify which section(s) of the corporate area you wish to search under:

  • TSO Home/Corporate Information
  • News & Media
  • Services

4. Specific Search

Allows you to specify the subject areas you wish to search under:

  • Construction
  • Corporate
  • Driving & Transport
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Fire
  • Health & Pharmaceutical
  • Health & Safety
  • Law
  • Legislation & Government
  • Project Management
  • IT & E-Commerce
  • Reference & Directories
  • Regulations
  • Social Issues
  • Statistics
  • Uncovered Editions

5. Display

Allows you to specify the number of search results returned in a page (from 10 to 100).

Publication Search

The search options under Publication Search are split into 4 main areas:

1. Using


  • All words - the search engine will search under the exact search term selected. This is the default setting.
  • Concept - the search engine's thesaurus function will also search under words with the same meaning as the search term selected.

2. Book Details


  • Publication type
    Allows you to limit your search to a particular publication type inlcuding:
    All Titles - allows you to search all publications available from the online bookshop.
    TSO publications - allows you to search just TSO publications.
    BSI publications - allows you to search just BSI publications.
  • Title
    To carry out a search using publication title enter the title of the publication you are searching for in the 'Title' field, for example 'The Civil Service Yearbook'.
  • ISBN
    To carry out a search using an ISBN, simply enter the ISBN in the 'ISBN' field.
  • Author
    To carry out a search by author, simply enter the name of the author in the 'Author' field, for example 'Lord Woolfe'.
  • Publisher
    To carry out a search by publisher, simply enter the name of the publisher in the 'Publisher' field, for example McGraw Hill.
  • Publication Date
    To carry out a search by publication date, simply enter the date the title was published in the 'Publication Date' field.
    For example to search for a publication published between 16th January 2002 and 17th January 2002 enter '16/01/02' to '17/01/02.
    To search for a publication published on 1st September 2002 enter '01/10/02' to '01/10/02'.

3. Categories to limit the search to

Allows you to further limit your search to a particular type of publication including:

  • Bills
  • Acts
  • Statutory Instruments/Rules
  • House of Commons Papers
  • House of Lords Papers
  • Command Papers

4. Display

Allows you to specify the number of search results returned in a page (from 10 to 100).

How to perform a Quick Search


  • 1. Enter the phrase or term you wish to search under in the Quick Search box.
  • 2. Select to search under content or products, by clicking on the relevant circle.
  • 3. Click on the blue arrow.
  • 4. Search results will be displayed. Click on the links displayed to access any of the information returned in the search results.
  • 5. To perform a new search repeat steps 1 to 4.

If you have selected to perform a product search and wish to purchase any of the publications listed in the search results, please view the steps below:

  • 1. To view further details on any publication listed in the search results, simply click on the underlined links. This will then take you through to the online bookshop.
  • 2. To have a publication sent directly to your shopping basket (ready for you to purchase), click on the 'Buy Now' button.
  • 3. To complete your purchase at this point see point 4 in 'Purchasing from categories and results' in the online bookshop help pages. The online bookshop help pages can be accessed by clicking on the 'Help' link displayed on the right hand side of the page throughout the bookshop or at the bottom of the page in the bookshop shopping basket.

Should the search results not match your requirements, at the top of the search results page you will be offered the option to refine your search, this button will take you through to the Advanced Search functionality.

How to perform an Advanced Search


Advanced Search allows you to be more specific in your search requirements. There are two types of Advanced Search offered in the corporate area:

  • Content Search - allow you to search the content tso.co.uk - Home, Services and News & Media
  • Publication Search - allows you to search publications available from the TSO online bookshop

Content Search


  • 1. Enter the terms you wish to search under in the 'Keywords' field .
  • 2. Select to search using 'All Words', 'Exact Phrase', 'Any Words' or 'Concept'.
  • 3. Select to search across 'TSO Home/Corporate Information', 'News & Media' and 'Services'.
  • 4. Specify if you wish to limit your search to a specific subject area.
  • 5. Select the maximum number of results listed per page (from 10 to 100).
  • 6. Click on the 'Search' button.
  • 7. Search results will be displayed. Click on the links displayed to access any of the information returned in the search results.
  • 8. To perform a new Content Search click on the 'New' button and repeat steps 1 to 6.

Should the search results not match your requirements, you can choose to refine your search by clicking on the 'Refine' button and editing the search criteria originally submitted.

Publication Search

  • 1. Click on the 'Advanced Search' link on the right hand side of the screen.
  • 2. Select whether you wish to search using 'All Words' or if you wish to perform a 'Concept' search.
  • 3. Specify which publication type you wish to search on (All titles/TSO publications/BSI publications).
  • 4. Enter any details you have on the publication you require in the relevant fields.
  • 5. Specify if you wish to limit the search to certain types of publications (Bills, Acts, Statutory Instruments/Rules, House of Commons Papers, House of Lords Papers and Command Papers).
  • 6. Select the maximum number of results to be listed per page (from 10 to 100).
  • 7. Click on the 'Search' button.
  • 8. Search results will be displayed. Click on the underlined links to view further details on any publication listed. This will then take you through to the TSO online bookshop.
  • 9. To have a publication sent directly to your shopping basket (ready for you to purchase), click on the 'Buy Now' button.
  • 10. To complete your purchase at this point see point 4 in 'Purchasing from categories and results' in the online bookshop help pages. The online bookshop help pages can be accessed by clicking on the 'Help' link displayed on the right hand side of the page throughout the bookshop or at the bottom of the page in the bookshop shopping basket.
  • 11. To perform a new Advanced Search simply click on the 'New' button and repeat steps 2 to 7.

Should the search results not match your requirements, you can choose to refine your search by clicking on the 'Refine' button and editing the search criteria originally submitted.
